James Spann: Clouds linger in Alabama tonight; slow clearing Tuesday

RADAR CHECK: We have lingering patches of light rain over the eastern half of Alabama this afternoon. Some of the heaviest snow this morning was over Pickens, Lamar, Fayette, Marion and Winston counties, where a few spots saw 2 to 3 inches. The rain moves out of the state this evening, but clouds linger tonight. We will drop into the low 30s early Tuesday morning.

REST OF THE WEEK: Clouds Tuesday morning should give way to some sunshine by afternoon; the high will be between 45 and 50 degrees. Then, expect a good supply of sunshine through midweek with a warming trend. We reach the low 50s Wednesday, followed by upper 50s Thursday. On Friday, a cold front will pass thorough the state with potential for a little scattered light rain. Moisture will be very limited, and rain totals will be light and spotty. Temperatures will likely fall into the 40s Friday afternoon with a brisk north wind following the frontal passage.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be dry, the sky partly to mostly sunny with a high near 50 degrees. Clouds increase Sunday, and we are seeing hints in global models that some light precipitation might be possible Sunday night. It’s too early to know whether we see anything significant or if snow will be involved. Just something to watch for now. Sunday’s high will be in the mid to upper 40s.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks dry Monday and Tuesday; the next chance of rain seems to come late Wednesday, Wednesday night or Thursday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1918: A strong area of low pressure brought snow and bitter cold temperatures to Chattanooga, Little Rock and Shreveport. Birmingham picked up about one inch of snow. In far southeast Alabama, an estimated F3 tornado damaged virtually every building in the town of Webb in Houston County. The tornado leveled one rural school, killing one teacher and seven students.
