James Spann: A little snow for far north Alabama late tonight/early Saturday
WINDY WINTER DAY: A tightening pressure gradient is bringing windy conditions to Alabama this afternoon; winds have gusted to 30 mph in spots. The sky is mostly sunny, but clouds will move into the northern half of the state over the next few hours.
Lobes of energy rotating around a deep upper low north of Alabama will bring the chance of snow showers or snow flurries to the Tennessee Valley late tonight and Saturday morning. The best chance of seeing snowflakes will be along and north of U.S. 278, north of a line from Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden. Some grassy areas could see some light accumulation, but no travel impact is expected. Snow showers will end by midmorning.
Otherwise, morning clouds will give way to afternoon sunshine Saturday with a high in the mid 40s. The weather stays dry Sunday; we start the day in the 28- to 32-degree range, followed by a high around 50 degrees. The sky Sunday will be partly to mostly sunny.
NEXT WEEK: The weather will stay dry Monday and Tuesday; we reach the mid 50s Monday, followed by upper 50s Tuesday. The latest global model runs keep most of the state dry Wednesday, but occasional rain looks likely Thursday and Friday as moisture levels rise and a weak front drifts into the state. There’s still no sign of any bitterly cold air, winter storms or severe thunderstorms over the next seven to 10 days.
ON THIS DATE IN 1967: The Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 in Super Bowl I at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. From the weather station at the USC campus in downtown Los Angeles, the high temperature was 79 degrees and the low was 51. There was a light west wind.
ON THIS DATE IN 1972: In Flint, Michigan, daytime temperature rose to only 3 degrees below zero. This is the second-coldest maximum temperature recorded in the city of Flint since 1921. Detroit’s high temperature was zero.
