James Spann: Rain returns to Alabama over the weekend; dry next week

MIXED SUN AND CLOUDS: For some, the sun is shining brightly this afternoon across Alabama, but some are under a persistent cloud cover. Most of the state is noticeably colder today; in fact, some spots in the northern counties are barely out of the 30s. The cold front has stalled out around Troy; Dothan is still in the upper 70s at mid-afternoon.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Clouds increase Saturday, and rain returns to the northern half of the state late Saturday night into Sunday morning as a wave of low pressure forms along the front to the south. Rain amounts should be one-half inch or less for most places, and there is no risk of severe storms. In fact, no thunder is expected. Rain will end from north to south Sunday afternoon, but clouds will linger. Highs over the weekend will be between 50 and 55 degrees for most communities.

NEXT WEEK: We are expecting delightful weather through the week as March comes in like a lamb — sunny days and fair nights with highs in the 60s Monday through Wednesday, close to 70 Thursday and in the low 70s Friday. There’s no sign of flooding, severe thunderstorms, snow or ice for Alabama for the next seven to 10 days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1934: A series of tornadoes moved across the Deep South. Nineteen people were killed in at least six significant tornadoes. The hardest-hit communities were Bowden, Georgia, and Shady Grove, Alabama. One person died in a tornado near Calera. One home in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, was picked up, thrown 400 feet and blown to bits. Six family members were killed in the house.

ON THIS DATE IN 2015: Much of north Alabama was covered in snow. More than 12 inches of snow was unofficially measured along the U.S. 278 corridor in Marion County. The highest unofficial measurement came from Guin, with 12.7 inches. Amounts in the Birmingham metro were generally one-half inch or less, with very little snow reported south of I-20.
