James Spann: Drier, calmer weather ahead for Alabama

James Spann forecasts a rain-free week for Alabama from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.

RADAR CHECK: Rain has moved out of Alabama early this morning, but clouds linger across much of the state at daybreak. We are forecasting a clearing sky today with sunshine returning this afternoon. The high will be between 67 and 71 degrees for most places. The average high for Birmingham on April 18 is 76.

It is a dry forecast for the rest of the week as an upper ridge builds across the region. Tuesday will be sunny with a high in the mid to upper 60s, and mostly sunny weather continues each day through Friday with a warming trend beginning Wednesday. The high will be in the mid 70s Wednesday, followed by low 80s Thursday and mid 80s Friday.

WARM WEEKEND AHEAD: Get ready for the warmest weekend so far this year across Alabama; we are forecasting highs in the mid to upper 80s Saturday and Sunday. It will feel like summer. The ridge will also keep the state rain-free; the sky will be partly to mostly sunny both days.

NEXT WEEK: We are seeing evidence a few showers could return to the northern half of the state Monday, April 25, but most of next week looks quiet as the ridge remains in place. There’s no sign of any severe weather threats for Alabama at this point for the rest of April.ON THIS DATE IN 1906: At 5:12 a.m., a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit San Francisco. A devastating fire soon broke out in the city and lasted for several days. About 3,000 people died and more than 80% of San Francisco was destroyed.

ON THIS DATE IN 2019: A total of 44 confirmed tornadoes touched down across Mississippi, the strongest of which caused high-end EF2 damage in Morton. This ties the Hurricane Rita tornado outbreak as the largest outbreak in Mississippi history.
