THIS WEEKEND: We’re starting off with some clouds across Alabama this morning, and those will continue to build throughout the day. With the heating of the day, we’ll have some isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms develop. Those will start during the afternoon, persist into the evening and linger into the late-night hours before eventually dissipating. Overnight we’ll have some patchy, dense fog develop. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s.

Sunday will be mostly sunny, with only a few isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon. A front will begin to move into northwestern Alabama during the late night and overnight that will bring a chance of storms. A marginal risk for severe storms is up for northwestern and extreme northern Alabama for the threat of isolated damaging wind gusts. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s.

NEXT WEEK: The front will move through the remainder of the state on Monday, bringing a small chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Much of the eastern half of the state is under a marginal risk for severe storms, where isolated damaging wind gusts are possible. Highs will be in the lower 80s to the lower 90s.

Ridging builds in starting Tuesday that will bring the blast furnace of heat to Alabama. It will be sunny, with highs in the upper 80s to the lower 90s. Wednesday will be hotter yet underneath mostly sunny skies. Highs will be in the upper 80s to the mid 90s. Thursday and Friday will remain hot, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the lower to mid 90s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced severe weather from northwest Texas to western Missouri. Severe thunderstorms spawned 17 tornadoes, including nine in Texas. Four tornadoes in Texas injured nine people. Thunderstorms in Texas also produced hail 4 inches in diameter at Shamrock and 4½ inches in diameter near Guthrie. Thunderstorms over northeastern Kansas produced more than 7 inches of rain in Chautauqua County between 9 p.m. and midnight.
