campAlabama Power teamed up with the Mobile County Public Schools, the Mobile Area Education Foundation and the George Bryant Career Technical Center to sponsor Girls Can Camp June 3-7 at the Bryant Career Technical School in Irvington. The program introduced 20 eighth and ninth grade girls to careers in the construction industry. The girls participated in hands-on activities to learn more about skills needed in the electrical, carpentry, welding and pipefitting career fields.

Employees from the Barry Steam Plant helped the girls learn about electricity, electric circuits and welding. Feleshia Williams and Tonya Byrd, female welders at Barry Steam Plant, helped the girls learn welding basics.

The camp is designed to provide a supportive environment to help girls explore career paths in construction. Activities at the camp helped the girls develop increased self-esteem and greater confidence as they tackled and completed challenging projects. Throughout the camp, women from all areas of construction shared their experiences and successes in this exciting field of work.

Camp sponsors included Go Build Alabama, Airgas, Austal, Evonik Industries, Fluor, G.A. West & Company, Industrial Valve, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 345, KBR, Performance Contractors and SSAB.
