Laughter, squeals and cheers filled the air at the Regions Tradition as more than 600 third- through fifth-graders from area schools attended the Junior Clinic hosted by Alabama Power. But the students had more than a fun-filled day on the golf course, they took away life lessons and reassurances.

Champions Tour professional Esteban Toldeo spent time with the students, teaching them about golf and, more importantly, the values involved in the game. He was joined by Jeh Jeh Pruitt, anchor and reporter at Fox 6 WBRC-TV, and the two kept the attention of the future golfer hopefuls by practicing their game and telling stories.

“When I was little, I wanted to play the PGA Tour against the best players in the world,” said Toledo.

Toledo shared his story, reinforcing the importance of dedication and hard work. Toledo is the youngest of 11 children, having learned to play golf by working on a driving range in Mexico.

Driving home the point

“I have had a lot of goals and dreams in my life. What are your goals? How are you going to accomplish your goals?” Toledo asked the students.

As he talked, Toledo invited the youths to play golf with him. As students tried and missed, or nailed a ball, Toledo used each instance to reinforce one of the sport’s many lessons.

“I practice so much to get better,” said Toledo. “That’s why you go to school, to get better.”

Toledo enthusiastically reinforced the importance of school and staying away from drugs. This is his second year to participate in the Junior Clinic and for Toledo, it’s just as much of a calling as the Champions Tour.

“You’ve got to understand, it’s not just about making money. No, it’s about doing something for the kids; being able to get out here and teach them about golf but being able to teach them how to do well in life and do a good job,” explained Toledo.

Students were quick to meet and hug Toledo after the clinic, requesting autographs and pictures with him. Toledo is an ambassador of the Get a Grip Foundation, which makes golf and education accessible to any child. He also recently launched the Esteban Toledo Family Foundation.

The Regions Tradition is Wednesday, May 13 through Sunday, May 17. All of the stars of the Champions Tour will compete in this major championship, including Fred Couples, Tom Watson, Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer, David Frost, Fred Funk, Tom Lehman and defending champion Kenny Perry.
