Kamtek seeking multimillion-dollar expansion in Birmingham

Kamtek International could build an aluminum casting plant next to its existing operations in northeast Birmingham, according to an agenda item on tomorrow’s Birmingham City Council meeting.

A separate agenda item for today’s joint meeting of the city council’s Budget and Finance and Economic Development committees said Kamtek plans to invest at least $80 million in the project and create at least 120 new jobs.

IMG_0129The subsidiary of Canadian-based automotive supplier Magna Ltd., has operated and expanded its stamping and assembly operations in the industrial park multiple times since first locating there as the former Ogihara in 1997 to supply Mercedes-Benz in Vance. Magna purchased Ogihara in 2008.

According to the agenda item, Kamtek wants to purchase a long-vacant piece of property from the city across from its facility on Sterilite Drive. If the city approves the sale of the 74 acres for $1 per year for 99 years, Kamtek will build a 148,000-square-foot plant with the potential to expand to 400,000 square feet.

Automakers are seeking more aluminum parts because they are lighter than steel and allow vehicles to better meet increasingly lower fuel consumption standards.
