If you’ve ever wished that your doctor would come to you, Baptist Health System has the solution: Be Well Mobile.

On Nov. 5, Baptist Health System (BHS) unveiled its new, traveling primary care clinic for employers across central Alabama – a 38-foot, custom-built Winnebago outfitted with two private examination rooms, a telehealth monitor, secure Wi-Fi and digital diagnostics equipment.

“Our concept is to work with employers, to help them support and encourage their employees to prioritize their health,” Dr. Anne-Laura Cook said. “It’s the first primary care clinic on wheels that we’re aware of in this area of the country.”

Dr. Cook is a 2006 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine and medical director of Population Health Management and Primary Care Innovation – BHS.

Be Well Mobile will bring on-site healthcare to employees, making it easy to schedule doctor visits and receive tailored care.

“This will be just like going to your neighborhood clinic, but we’ll come to employees in their parking lot,” said Cook, a 2006 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine and medical director of Population Health Management and Primary Care Innovation – BHS.

An online appointment scheduling website will be available to patients. BHS will set a regular doctor’s appointment schedule for various office locations, Cook said. An internal medicine specialist, Cook will consult employers’ health plans and match patients’ scheduled care with their health needs and her knowledge of their available insurance coverage.

“If we have a patient with high blood pressure, for instance, it will be simple for them to see us: ‘We’ll see you at the same time, same place, next month,’” Cook said. Be Well also offers diabetes education and tobacco treatment programs.

The Be Well Mobile will bring on-site healthcare to employers in Birmingham and central Alabama.

Cook conceived the mobile-healthcare concept after talking with a human resources director who was frustrated that some employees didn’t take time for wellness visits with their doctors. He commented, on the other hand, that food trucks came daily to deliver lunch to workers.

“He said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if a doctor actually came to us in our parking lot?’” Cook said. “That’s what sparked this concept, and we’re happy that it’s finally here.”

Becky Sanders, physical resource specialist-BHS, said the Be Well Mobile will visit employers around Birmingham and central Alabama. The bus will make its inaugural visit on Nov. 10 to employees of Golden Flake Snack Food.

“We are excited about our new mobile clinic,” said Sanders, a BHS employee for 11 years. “In addition to visits to our employer partners, Be Well Mobile will take part in events for underserved residents in central Alabama who do not have access to high-quality healthcare.”
