James Spann: Warmer days ahead for Alabama

Feb17Feature

THIS AFTERNOON: Pretty much a case of severe clear across much of Alabama today, with just a few lingering clouds near the Tennessee border at mid-afternoon. Temperatures are mostly in the 50s, just a few degrees cooler than yesterday. Tonight will be clear and chilly with a low down in the mid 30s by daybreak tomorrow.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Sunny weather continues with a warming trend. We rise into the low to mid 60s tomorrow, followed by upper 60s Friday. Some places could very well touch 70 degrees Friday afternoon.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday looks mostly dry, although a few isolated showers could show up over far North Alabama across the Tennessee Valley. Expect a mix of sun and clouds with a high between 67 and 70 degrees. Then, on Sunday, there will be cloudy periods, and a few showers are possible mainly over the northern third of the state. But, nothing widespread or heavy, and the weather stays mild with a high in the 60s. The GFS is printing a high of 68 for Birmingham Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: A wave of low pressure forms on the front west of Alabama, and that will bring a widespread rain event to the state Monday and Tuesday as the surface low tracks right on top of us. There could be some thunder, but it doesn’t look like a severe weather setup. Rain amounts of 1-2 inches are likely Monday and Tuesday.

Drier air will begin to return Wednesday as the low moves northeast, and the weather should be dry and pleasant Thursday and Friday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
