Every day, in all types of weather, linemen (women, too) are on the job serving Alabama Power customers, and the customers of utilities across the country and across the globe.
It’s not an easy job. In fact, it can be downright dangerous. For one, it involves electricity. And it involves getting into places that aren’t so easy to reach – up high on poles or towers, down low in remote ravines or on steep slopes. Or it means working on busy highways, often after dark.
And when natural disasters strike, it’s not unusual for linemen to be first on the scene – before police or fire personnel arrive. That was the case five years ago, when the 2011 tornadoes devastated large sections of Alabama. It was the most costly and damaging storm in Alabama Power’s 110-year history, and our linemen – and linemen from many other states who came to our aid – played a pivotal role in getting service restored in just seven days.

So today, National Lineman Appreciation Day, Alabama Power is kicking off a seven-week campaign that will shine a little light – the kind linemen keep on for us – on the great work they do, day in and day out. The campaign will culminate June 6 on Alabama Lineman Appreciation Day.
