THIS AFTERNOON: Temperatures are generally in the low 90s across Alabama this afternoon, and we have widely scattered, random showers and storms in progress. Exactly what you expect on a July day. The showers and storms will dissipate once the sun goes down later this evening.

REST OF THE WEEK: Hot weather will be the big story. We expect mid 90s tomorrow and Wednesday, and highs between 97 and 100 degrees Thursday and Friday. Birmingham did hit 100 degrees back on June 26, but for most this will be the hottest weather so far this summer.

We will have a few showers and storms around during the afternoon and evening hours, but they will be fewer in number by Thursday and Friday as the upper ridge/warm air aloft creeps in.

THE WEEKEND: The upper ridge weakens ever so slightly, highs drop into the mid 90s, and we will have the chance of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms” Saturday and Sunday. Partly sunny days, mostly fair nights.

NEXT WEEK: The summer pattern continues, and a persistence forecast remains the best solution with highs generally in the 91-95 degree range. The only hope for rain is a passing afternoon shower or storm. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: Same story. Dry air over the Atlantic basin, no tropical storm formation this week.

AT THE BEACH: About 8 to 10 hours of sunshine daily on the coast from Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach through the weekend; of course the usual chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm from time to time.
