James Spann: Alabama stays warm, dry through Friday

WARM MAY AFTERNOON: Temperatures have reached the low 80s across much of north and central Alabama this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine through a shallow cumulus field. There’s nothing on radar, and tonight will be mostly fair with a low in the low 60s.
REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow still looks like an active severe weather day across parts of the central U.S., with potential for storms with large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.
The system responsible for the severe weather threat will weaken and lift well to the north of Alabama late in the week, and for us we are still forecasting warm and dry weather through Friday — partly to mostly sunny days, fair nights and highs in the mid 80s.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A weak surface boundary will drift into Alabama and stall out, ultimately losing its identity by Sunday and Monday. As a result, we will forecast scattered showers and thunderstorms over the weekend. But this won’t be a total washout. The showers will be rather random and scattered, and the sun should break out at times. It’s impossible to tell you exactly when and where it will rain over the weekend, but be ready for a passing shower or storm from time to time if you have something going on outdoors. The high will be close to 80 degrees both days.
NEXT WEEK: Most of the week looks warm and dry with highs in the 80s; a weak front could bring a chance of showers toward the end of the week. For now we don’t see any severe weather signals for our state over the next 10-15 days, based on global model output. But remember our spring tornado season runs through the end of May.
WET APRIL: Some rain totals for last month across Alabama:

- Tuscaloosa — 8.03 inches
- Muscle Shoals — 7.42 inches
- Anniston — 3.98 inches
