James Spann: Hot afternoons, scarce showers for Alabama through Sunday

James Spann forecasts mostly dry weather for Alabama from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.
QUIET PATTERN CONTINUES: The weather won’t change too much across Alabama through the weekend. Precipitable water values will drop a bit, meaning showers will be pretty hard to find each afternoon (although the chance of rain is not zero). Look for mostly sunny days, fair nights and highs in the low 90s today and between 92 and 95 over the weekend. Odds of any one spot getting wet are 10% today and closer to 5% Saturday and Sunday.
NEXT WEEK: Moisture levels will rise, and the air aloft will be a bit cooler, so we will bring back the daily chance of random, scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. The best chance of showers will come from 1 until 9 p.m.; otherwise, expect partly sunny days with highs mostly in the low 90s, right at seasonal averages for mid-August in Alabama.
TROPICS: All remains very calm across the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected for the next five days. But seasonal outlooks issued by NOAA and others suggest a very active period is likely later this month, through September and possibly into parts of October.
ON THIS DATE IN 1980: Hurricane Allen bottomed out at 899 millibars (26.55 inches of mercury) while moving through the Yucatan Channel in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. Allen was the second-lowest pressure ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere up to that time. Allen’s winds at the time were sustained at 190 mph.
