James Spann: Alabama stays dry through the weekend

BLUE SKY: Nothing but sunshine across Alabama this afternoon; temperatures are mostly in the mid to upper 60s. Tonight will be clear and not as cold as last night; lows will be mostly between 34 and 40 degrees.
The weather will stay dry through Friday with mostly sunny days, fair nights and a warming trend. Look for a high in the low 70s Wednesday and Thursday, followed by mid 70s Friday.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Moisture levels will rise a bit, but for now we don’t expect any rain over the weekend. Saturday and Sunday will be partly sunny with highs in the mid 70s, about 5 degrees above average for early November in Alabama. Lows will be in the low 60s.
NEXT WEEK: There is considerable uncertainty in the forecast next week with lots of questions about Eta, but we will mention some risk of showers by Tuesday and Wednesday with increasing moisture. Highs through the week will be in the 70s.
TROPICS: Hurricane Eta, with winds of 140 mph, has been meandering just off the Nicaragua coast. It will move inland over the next several hours with a weakening trend.
It is still not certain whether the surface circulation will survive its trek over Central America during the next several days, but the official forecast continues to show the remnants of Eta emerging over the northwestern Caribbean Sea late this week. If it survives, Eta could move into the southeast Gulf of Mexico this weekend, but it is too early to call. We will be watching.
The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet; the hurricane season ends Nov. 30.
ON THIS DATE IN 1966: An early-season snowfall that started Nov. 2 whitened the ground from Alabama to Michigan. Mobile had its earliest snowflakes on record; Huntsville picked up 4 inches of snow. Just three days later, temperatures rebounded back into the 60s, and Alabama spent a work week in the 70s following the snow.
