James Spann: Alabama stays dry today; a few scattered showers Tuesday

James Spann has the Alabama forecast for MLK Day and the week ahead from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.
SUNNY MONDAY: A dry air mass covers Alabama this morning; temperatures were between 28 and 33 degrees for most communities at daybreak. Expect a sunny sky today with a high in the low to mid 50s, the average high for Birmingham on Jan. 18 is 54. Clouds return to the state Tuesday ahead of a cold front, and a few scattered showers could form along the front over the northern half of the state. Moisture will be limited, so rain amounts will be light and spotty. The high will be in the mid 50s.
REST OF THE WEEK: Wednesday will be dry with a mix of sun and clouds; afternoon temperatures return to the 50s. But the weather turns wet Thursday and Friday with periods of rain thanks to a stalled surface front and deep moisture moving in from the south. There’s no risk of severe storms and probably no thunder. Rain totals Thursday and Friday will be 1-2 inches for much of the state.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be dry; with a partly sunny sky the high will be in the mid 50s. But moisture returns quickly Sunday as showers will likely return to the state. It won’t be an all-day rain, but a few passing showers are likely with a high in the upper 50s.
NEXT WEEK: Showers are likely Monday with the approach of another cold front; rain becomes more widespread Monday night before ending Tuesday morning. Midweek looks dry before more rain returns Thursday night into Friday. Temperatures remain seasonal with highs generally in the 50s. There’s still no sign of any bitterly cold air, winter storms or severe thunderstorms for the rest of January.
ON THIS DATE IN 1971: A warm Santa Ana condition brought a 95-degree reading to Los Angeles, the highest January temperature on record. It was 95 degrees in Palm Springs, the highest temperature on record for January as well.
ON THIS DATE IN 1973: The first tornado death of the year occurred north of Corey, Louisiana, during the afternoon. Although a girl was killed when a tenant farm was destroyed, a baby received only minor injuries when it was carried 300 to 400 yards by the tornado.
