RADAR CHECK: Scattered showers are in progress across Alabama early this morning in the tropical air. This will be another day with occasional showers and a few strong thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has much of the state (except the far west and northwest counties) in a marginal risk (level 1 out of 5) of severe thunderstorms today; heavier storms will be capable of producing hail and gusty winds. There is a very low-end risk of an isolated, brief tornado. Additional rain amounts of around 1 inch are likely for most places.Rain will end from west to east this evening, followed by a clearing sky. Friday will be dry with a partly to mostly sunny sky; the high will be in the mid to upper 70s, about 10 degrees below average for late May in Alabama.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: A fine holiday weekend is ahead with sunny days, fair, pleasant nights and a warming trend. The highs will be in the low 80s Saturday and upper 80s Sunday. Monday’s high will be very close to 90 degrees. Lows will be mostly in the 60s, but cooler spots will be in the pleasant 50s Saturday and Sunday mornings.

REST OF NEXT WEEK: The weather continues to look very quiet with mostly sunny days and clear nights. A few spotty showers could show up late in the week as moisture levels rise; highs will be close to 90 on most days.ON THIS DATE IN 1917: A major tornadic thunderstorm took a 293-mile track across parts of central Illinois and Indiana. A later study indicated that what was once believed to be a single tornado was likely at least eight separate tornadoes. Overall, 101 people in Illinois were killed during the tornado outbreak, with 638 injured.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: A BMI Airbus bound for Cyprus from Manchester, England, encountered a violent thunderstorm over Germany. The plane bounced and twisted violently as it ran into severe turbulence with huge hailstones pounding the exterior. A football-sized hole was punched in the aircraft’s surface. None of the 213 passengers or eight crew members was seriously hurt.
