The newly restored Lyric Theatre provided the perfect backdrop for a concert. It also provided the perfect backdrop for a celebration honoring a local pioneer Wednesday evening, Feb. 10.

But this wasn’t just any concert, nor was it just any local honoree.

The Temptations Review featuring Fairfield native Dennis Edwards performed group hits old and new. The performance was part of the program “Through the Lens,” honoring the founder of The Birmingham Times, Dr. Jesse J. Lewis Sr.

Lewis founded The Birmingham Times during the civil rights movement 52 years ago. It has remained a strong voice in Birmingham’s African-American community.

Now the newspaper prepares for its next chapter. The Foundation for Progress in Journalism (FPJ) recently bought the newspaper and, according to Lewis, this assures the newspaper will be around for another 50 years.

Former Montgomery Advertiser publisher Sam Martin, who addressed the audience last night and unveiled The Birmingham Times‘ new look and logo, assumed the role of president and publisher for the newspaper.

Barnett Wright, a former reporter for The Birmingham News and al.com, is the newspaper’s executive editor. Lewis is the publisher emeritus.

Influential business and thought leaders sang Lewis’ praises for his faithfulness and contributions to the community he loves. These included:

  • John Hudson, vice president of Public Relations and Charitable Giving, Alabama Power
  • Bobbie Knight, former vice president of Birmingham Division, Alabama Power
  • Brian Hilson, president and CEO, Birmingham Business Alliance
  • Dr. George French, president, Miles College
  • Rick Swagler, executive vice president and director of External Affairs, Regions Financial Corporation

Alabama NewsCenter’s Keisa Sharpe and Bruce Nix captured highlights from last night’s program honoring Lewis.
