On April 13, the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) Magic City Chapter will play a significant part in helping families like Toney’s enjoy the services offered by the YMCA. The chapter will host its fifth annual Power Run at the Trussville North Mall. All proceeds will support the YMCA Youth Development Program.Power-Run

The half-day event is open to all employees, their families and friends. There will be a 5,000-meter run, a 10k run and a half-mile fun run for children ages 10 and under. Activities for kids will include games and a moonwalk.

“No matter what age you are, the important thing is to get out there and get moving,” said Birmingham Division Engineer Nicole Hedrick. “It doesn’t matter how fast you run; everyone has the same satisfaction when they cross the finish line.”

Hedrick has taken part in every Power Run since the first one in 2008. “The great thing about this event is we’re doing something good for the community, for the YMCA and for our health,” said Hedrick, a longtime runner who has finished 12 marathons.

Brett Hamrick said anyone can sign up for the event, even if they’re not an avid runner. “I’ve run off and on over the years. But I especially take time for the Power Run because it’s a way to support the YMCA’s programs and give back to the community,” said Hamrick, engineering supervisor, Birmingham Distribution Support, and the chairman of this year’s run.

The Power Run will help provide scholarships for summer camp and after-school programs for children of families who need a helping hand.

“The YMCA believes all children should have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve,” said Jerry Wang, executive director of the Trussville YMCA. “The funds from your run will raise awareness about our programs and allow more children to get involved. With your help, we can offer more children a safe, healthy environment in which to grow and learn.”

The entry fee is $30 for the 5k and 10k events before April 7 and then $35 through April 13. The fun run for kids costs $10.
