Record cold temperatures translated to a new winter peak for power use for Alabama Power customers. Preliminary figures show that late Tuesday morning, the system topped out at 11,976 megawatts, eclipsing the previous winter peak set on January 12, 2011.
The cold took its toll on equipment, causing numerous local outages across the state. The peak outage impact was around 7:30 Tuesday morning, when there were 27,000 customers without service. By late Tuesday morning, nearly two-thirds of those had been restored.
The breakdown of affected customers by region:

Metro Birmingham | 1,500 |
Tuscaloosa (west Alabama) | 3,200 |
Dothan/Eufaula (southeast Alabama) | 600 |
TOTAL | 9,600 |
Crews continue to work to restore service to the remaining customers.
