The latest exhibit opening Saturday at the Birmingham Museum of Art brings 19th century fashion from central Asia to Alabama.
“All the Colors of the Rainbow: Uzbekistan Ikats from the Collection of Peggy Slappey” will run from March 19 through July 10 and features more than 60 robes, hats, shoes, jewelry and other items that are very much at home in an art museum. The bright colors and incredible craftsmanship are as much on display as the items themselves.
An opening party is planned from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. The exhibit is free to the public.

“In recent years, ikat patterns have permeated the fashion and design industry, touching everything from clothing and furniture to decorative arts,” Donald Wood, senior curator and curator of Asian art at the Birmingham Museum of Art, said. “Despite its contemporary ubiquity, the ikat tradition has roots that go back centuries and cross many different cultures. The robes you’ll find in this collection present a brilliant spectrum of color and design which has not been diminished in the 100 plus years that have passed since they were created.”
Wood introduces us to the exhibit and the history in this video.
