It isn’t taking long for the new Rotary Trail sign to take on “landmark” status on its way to becoming “iconic.”
As this time-lapse video by Christopher Jones reveals, everyone from passers-by to prom couples was taking a moment this weekend to take photos in front of the 46-foot sign that was lighted in a ceremony April 6.
Birmingham’s Rotary Trail sign is a photo favorite from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.
Monday afternoon, there were nearly 740 photos on Instagram tagged with #RotaryTrail and more can be found on Twitter.
The sign’s design is patterned after the the iconic “Birmingham the Magic City” sign that was built on a similar steel frame and welcomed visitors who traveled into the city through the former Terminal Station.
The western gateway’s Rotary Trail sign is a gift from BL Harbert International along with the donation of the raw materials from O’Neal Steel. Daniel Iron fabricated the structure and Fravert Services created its letters.
Rotary Trail designers Goodwyn Mills and Cawood and the Rotary Club of Birmingham wanted the sign to become a new landmark and draw attention to the western head of the four-block linear park.
Based on its first weekend in lights, mission accomplished.
