With SEC Media Days in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look at the new impact players that will suit up for Alabama’s marquee programs this year.
Auburn kicked off last year with high expectations for the program and new starting quarterback Jeremy Johnson. Those hopes came crashing back to Earth after barely escaping Jacksonville State in the second game of the season. After LSU’s Leonard Fournette ran the Tigers out of the Top 20 in week 3, establishing his legend in the process with 228 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries, it was all downhill for the Tigers, who finished a disappointing 7-6 overall and 2-6 in conference.
After Alabama fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the semifinals of the inaugural College Football Playoff to finish 12-2 in 2014, the Crimson Tide bounced back this past year to defeat the Clemson Tigers 45-40 in one of the most thrilling national championship games in recent memory. Nick Saban’s squad finished 14-1, 7-1 in conference, in capturing the program’s fourth title in seven years.
Auburn will be looking to turn the page in 2016, while Alabama aims to keep things the same. Both teams will feature some new faces they hope will advance their goals for the new season.
Here are a few players who have the potential to become household names during their transition into major college football.
BLAKE BARNETT, Quarterback, Alabama – The 6-foot-5 pocket passer out of Corona, California, will fight for every second of playing time he gets this fall, but there are many who believe that he’ll be named the full-time starter early in the year.
As a redshirt freshman last year, he competed against one of the stingiest defenses in the history of college football. Some see him as an upgrade from last year’s starter, Jake Coker, who will have an abundance of weapons at his disposal this year in tight end O.J. Howard and wide receiver Calvin Ridley.
NATE CRAIG-MYERS, Wide Receiver, Auburn – The Tigers’ anemic offense last year is in need of a huge overhaul at the receiver position. Craig-Myers should make his presence felt immediately. Considered the No. 2 receiving prospect in the country, the 6-foot-3 product out of Tampa, Florida, has huge hands, strength and is a physical player.
Auburn averaged a mere 22.1 points per game last year and the offense’s top returning pass catcher has just 13 receptions. That means that Craig-Myers will be a focal point of the offense that consistently runs four-receiver sets from day one.
BEN DAVIS, Inside Linebacker, Alabama – With his rare combination of size and athleticism, Davis is among the most versatile of freshmen defenders, capable of lining up inside, outside and in a three-point stance as a pass rusher. Despite the wealth of talent and depth in every Crimson Tide defense, Davis is a sure bet to see the field this year.
KYLE DAVIS, Wide Receiver, Auburn – Tigers fans who fretted over last year’s paltry production in the passing game should be excited about the addition of the 6-foot-3 Davis and the aforementioned Craig-Myers. Davis can go up in a crowd for jump balls, power his way over the middle and looks great in transitioning from extending his hands to receiving the ball and then tucking it away to motor up field.
With his size, and weighing around 220 pounds, he’s also an asset as a downfield blocker. He can line up wide and in the slot, break tackles downfield, has quickness and bulk that should open up some immediate playing time.
