Naked mole-rat go? Birmingham Zoo offers Pokemon discount and reasons to look up from your phone

You can snag a virtual Squirtle while you spy a real scheltopusik, capture a Charmander while glimpsing a Chilean flamingo or grab a Jigglypuff while you admire a jambu fruit dove.

The Birmingham Zoo is not only Pokemon Go-friendly, but it is offering half off admission to those with the game on their phone through the end of August.

But be warned: Once inside, the search for virtual creatures may pale in comparison to the real ones right in front of you.

To help with the transition, cards that look like a Pokemon Go screen have been placed at the animal exhibits with a picture of what you are looking for.

“I heard about Pokemon Go through my friends and then I realized that it was all over the world,” said Anna Turkett, lorikeet keeper and bird interpreter at The Birmingham Zoo. “I used that aspect of people playing it in the zoo and I decided to make some signs about even more real animals.”
