The University of Montevallo is the only Alabama campus to make a list of “The Most Beautiful Public College Campuses in America.”
University of Montevallo named one of the nation’s “most beautiful” campuses from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.
Thrillist website compiled the list, which puts Montevallo in league with the University of Hawaii, the University of Colorado and the University of Mississippi, among others.
“This rural campus between Birmingham and Montgomery could well be the hidden jewel of Alabama,” Thrillist said of Montevallo. “The campus is awash in classic Southern architecture like Reynolds and Palmer Halls, antebellum structures one wouldn’t expect in such a remote locale. But the scenic highlight of the campus is actually about 6 miles away at the university’s Ebenezer Swamp, a 60-acre wetland research center where students study the ecology of the Cahaba River watershed, or just escape into the wilderness for a little peace and quiet.”

John Stewart, president of the University of Montevallo, said the recognition is an honor.
“We agree, our campus is gorgeous,” Stewart said. “But many folks, even in Birmingham and Montgomery and places nearby, don’t know that the Olmsted Brothers who designed Central Park in New York and who laid out part of downtown Birmingham also designed this campus.”
