James Spann: Chilly tonight in Alabama; rain returns Sunday

COLD NIGHT: Temperatures are only in the 50s and 60s across the northern half of Alabama this afternoon despite sunshine in full supply. The average high (at Birmingham) for April 19 is 75.
With a clear sky and light wind, we project lows mostly in the 38- to 42-degree range early tomorrow, but colder spots will see low to mid 30s with a chance of scattered light frost. During the day tomorrow the sky will stay sunny with a high in the low to mid 70s.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday still looks like a delightful spring day with a good supply of sunshine and a high in the mid 70s. But clouds return quickly Saturday night, and Sunday will be a very wet day as a broad surface low moves in from the west. The rain should begin Sunday morning, with widespread rain during the afternoon and into Sunday night. With the surface low expected to pass to the south, there is no risk of severe storms, and we probably won’t have much thunder with temperatures in the 60s.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama’s annual spring “A Day” game is Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bryant Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. It will be a perfect day for the game. With a sunny sky, temperatures will rise from the low 70s at kickoff into the mid 70s by the second half. There is no risk of rain.
NEXT WEEK: An upper trough will set up across the Southeast early in the week; Monday looks like a cloudy, cool day with rain at times. A few lingering showers are possible Tuesday, but the latter half of the week looks dry with highs in the 70s.
