History is inherent in Payne’s Soda Fountain in Scottsboro.

The building itself is home to the state’s oldest remaining soda fountain and what once was a drug store is now a sandwich and ice cream shop with a 1950s retro décor.

Owner Lisa Garrett wishes she could rewind time to before COVID-19 when business was normal. Or better yet, fast-forward to when the pandemic is over.

“It’s slowly coming back,” she said. “A lot of people are afraid to come out and eat with each other.”

The business was closed for five months and has since reopened under the occupancy and social distancing guidelines.

That was five months without Payne’s Soda Fountain’s popular Red Slaw Dog. The hot dog with a ketchup-based slaw is an original twist on a classic – much like Payne’s itself. It’s earned a spot on the Alabama Tourism Department’s list of 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama.
