Western Division Vice President Mark Crews presented the Tuscaloosa Rotary Honor Flight with $5,000 from the Alabama Power Foundation.

World War II and Korean War veterans were on hand Tuesday afternoon in Tuscaloosa to participate in a grant presentation with Alabama Power and the Tuscaloosa Rotary Honor Flight.

Western Division Vice President Mark Crews presented the organization with $5,000 from the Alabama Power Foundation. The donation supported the sixth annual Honor Flight, which was held on Thursday, May 6.

“The Honor Flight is doing an incredible service by taking veterans on a trip of a lifetime,” said Crews. “This trip is a way to honor veterans and their service to our country.”

The Honor Flight allows for World War II and Korean War veterans to attend a day long trip to Washington, D.C. to see memorials, monuments and other sites.

Veterans will visit the WWII Memorial and Korean War Memorial as well as the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Wall, Iowa Jima Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Changing of the Guard and the FDR Memorial.

The trip is free to all veterans through donations from area organizations and community sponsors. Among the veterans present at the grant presentation on Tuesday were Alabama Power retirees Leon Jones, J.G. Brazil, Roy Lamon and James Shirley. All are active in the Honor Flight.

“It is a privilege to support the Honor Flight and what they are doing for veterans in this community,” said Crews. “They are true heroes and are deserving of this recognition.”
