More than 600 wines were uncorked and more than 40 Alabama food vendors were up for the tasting at Western’s Wine & Food Festival at the Birmingham Zoo Sept. 25.

“It’s an exciting event. An event at the Zoo outside in the fall is just spectacular,” said Darwin Metcalf, president of Western Supermarkets.

There were plenty of pinots, bountiful blancs, copious cabs, sufficient shirazes, masses of merlots and even some vermouth, sherry and port thrown into the flow.

In between sips, patrons could sample everything from hummus to sushi. Belle Chevre cheeses, Evans Meats grass-fed beef, Fox Valley crabcakes and Dean’s Cake House cakes were among the delectable dishes served.

The event raised money for the Emmet O’Neal Library in Mountain Brook, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

“Eleven years ago we started to partner with Western Supermarkets for the annual Food & Wine Festival,” said Katie Moellering, head of the Adult and Reference Department at the library. “Each year, they have donated the proceeds to the library and then we, in turn, use the proceeds to fund our ‘Evening with the Author’ series.”

Photographer Phil Free and videographer Wynter Byrd were on hand to capture the sights and sounds for Alabama NewsCenter.
