Explore Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum near Montgomery
Starting Feb. 5, visit Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum to see many varieties of blooming azaleas, camellias, bulbs and annuals. View ancient Greek statuary similarly offered in European museums. Carolina jasmine – for which the gardens are named – cover arbors in brilliant yellow flowers. Located between Montgomery and Wetumpka off U.S. Highway 31 on Jasmine Hill Road, the gardens are open year-round Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults, $6 for children 3 to 12, and children 2 and under are free.
Calling cool cats to the Jazz Cat Ball in Birmingham Feb. 5
Don’t miss the Jazz Cat Ball for the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center in Birmingham. The ball lasts from 6 p.m. until midnight. Guests will enjoy a seated Cajun dinner, ritzy casino games and auctions with exciting trips, jewelry and exclusive offerings. Tickets are $125 each. Proceeds benefit animals at the GBHS, vital to providing health care, shelter, food and socialization for thousands of homeless, abused and neglected animals.
Booms away at Fort Morgan with USS Farragut Mardi Gras ship on Feb. 5
Attend Farragut Day on Mobile Bay at Fort Morgan State Historic Site from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. This Navy guided missile destroyer will serve as the 2016 Mardi Gras ship in Mobile, following Fort Morgan’s special morning ceremony to honor the historic Navy ship Tecumseh, sunk during the Battle of Mobile Bay. Highlights include wreath-laying by Civil War re-enactors, firing of Fort Morgan cannons and a military fly-over. Fort Morgan is in Gulf Shores, at 110 State Hwy. 180 W. Everybody’s Wild About Chocolate Feb. 6
Taste tempting chocolate concoctions from Birmingham’s best restaurants, caterers and bakeries during the Alabama Wildlife Center’s Valentine Gala, Wild About Chocolate. Appetizers and beverages will be served, and participants will enjoy auctions and music at the Harbert Center in downtown Birmingham. Dress is cocktail attire. First Saturday Family Day in Dothan, Feb. 6
Bring the kids to a free, come-and-go workshop for families on the first Saturday of each month at the Wiregrass Museum of Art and Conference Center.
Supplies are provided for the workshop from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A different project is featured monthly.
This Saturday will include the first family yoga class, by a certified yoga instructor, to be held four times yearly on select Saturdays. Parents and children (limited to 15 participants) will be guided through the yoga class from 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The center will host the Wiregrass Humane Society for pet adoption day through 2:30 p.m. Events are held at 126 Museum Ave., in Dothan, AL 36303.
