SUMMER PREVIEW CONTINUES: A very warm and mostly dry pattern will continue across our state through the weekend. We might see a few isolated showers, mainly over the Tennessee Valley of far north Alabama tomorrow, but most communities will stay rain-free. Highs will be in the 86- to 90-degree range through Friday, and then pretty close to 90 degrees Saturday and Sunday. Some spots, especially over west Alabama, could see low 90s, making it the hottest weekend so far this year. Summer is almost here.

NEXT WEEK: We will introduce the risk of a few scattered showers Tuesday and Wednesday as moisture levels rise, but still nothing really widespread. There does seem to be a better chance of some decent rain in here toward the end of next week as a disturbance lifts northward from the Gulf of Mexico and an upper trough approaches from the west.

RAIN UPDATE: Today will be the 13th consecutive day with no measurable rain for Birmingham, based on data at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport. The total since Jan. 1 is 21.87 inches, and our surplus for the year is down to 1.58 inches. Anniston now has a deficiency of 1.33 inches for 2018.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: A “code orange” air quality alert has been issued for the Birmingham metro for today (Jefferson and Shelby counties) because of ground-level ozone. The combination of sunny, dry and hot conditions are expected to push ozone into the orange range (unhealthy for sensitive groups). Defer using gas-powered engines. Walk, bike, carpool or use transit if possible. Link errands into one trip. Conserve energy.
