As the first hurricane to make landfall in Alabama in 16 years, Hurricane Sally took its toll on the state’s coastline when it came ashore Wednesday, Sept. 16. When all was said and done, Sally brought severe flooding and high winds that knocked down poles and power lines in southern and central Alabama, disrupting power for more than 680,000 Alabama Power customers.
Most of the major damage, though, and the highest number of outages were in the Mobile area. Alabama Power crews were joined by those from 14 states to return power by Sept. 20 to all customers who were able to receive service.
From social media posts, to email, to “old-fashioned” letters, many have expressed thanks to the company for its efforts to restore power quickly and safely. That includes children from the First Baptist Church of Bay Minette’s afterschool program. Bay Minette is in Baldwin County about 20 miles from Mobile as the seagull flies. Along with downtown Mobile and southern Mobile County, Bay Minette was one of the heaviest hit areas.
“We are so grateful that we have all of you to help us during/after storms like Sally,” wrote Kaylee Morris, a church afterschool teacher who takes care of schoolchildren from kindergarten through sixth grade. “My kids and I wanted to show just how much we appreciate you!
“We are praying that you stay safe and get home to your families soon!”
