James Spann: Another warm, dry day in Alabama; rain at times Wednesday

James Spann forecasts a warm, dry day for Alabama from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.

ANOTHER VERY WARM APRIL DAY: With a partly to mostly sunny sky, we project temperatures between 84 and 88 degrees this afternoon, about 10 degrees above average for mid-April in Alabama. The record high today for Birmingham is 88, set in 2017; we don’t expect that to be broken, but it will be close. Clouds will increase tonight.

WET WEATHER RETURNS: Wednesday will be cloudy and cooler, with highs in the low to mid 70s. A few periods of rain are likely thanks to a passing disturbance; some thunder is possible, but severe storms are not expected. The best chance of a strong thunderstorm is over the southwest corner of the state, where the Storm Prediction Center has a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) defined for Washington, Mobile and Baldwin counties.

We will maintain the chance of some rain at times Wednesday night into Thursday morning, but the rest of the day Thursday will be dry. Clouds linger with a high only in the 65- to 70-degree range. Friday will be another mostly cloudy day, and we will bring in a chance of some light rain late in the day into Friday night — no severe storms and probably no thunder.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: During the day Saturday the best chance of rain shifts down into far south Alabama. Most of the day will be dry for the northern two-thirds of the state, with a mostly cloudy sky and highs in the upper 60s. For now, Sunday looks generally dry for the state with a few intervals of sun possible. Temperatures will remain below average, with highs between 66 and 71 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be very quiet for April in Alabama. Most of the state will be dry with temperatures a little below average.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Both Auburn and Alabama will hold their annual spring scrimmage games Saturday. The game in Tuscaloosa kicks off at noon; kickoff in Auburn is set for 1. At both stadiums we believe the weather will be dry, but the sky will be mostly cloudy. Temperatures will be in the 65- to 69-degree range in Tuscaloosa and Auburn Saturday afternoon.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: An F2 tornado hit Iowa City, Iowa, and trekked across parts of the University of Iowa campus, doing more than $15 million damage, hurting 30 people and damaging or destroying 1,051 buildings. Roof, steeple and bricks fell from St. Patrick’s Church shortly after 75 parishioners had taken to the rectory basement next door.
