Scott Martin: A raw winter’s day for Alabama

6 A.M. TEMPERATURES & WIND CHILLS:

  • Haleyville — temperature of 18 degrees / wind chill of 10 degrees
  • Bessemer — 23 / 15
  • Gadsden — 23 / 16
  • Birmingham — 24 / 14
  • Anniston — 25 / 16
  • Pell City — 25 / 18
  • Calera — 25 / 15

HEAVY WINTER COATS NEEDED TODAY: Skies will become sunny, but that may not help much with breezy conditions making it feel much colder. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 30s to the lower 40s, but wind chills will be in the 20s until the wind begins to subside later today.

ALMOST EARLY SPRING-LIKE SUNDAY: What a big swing in temperatures for Sunday. Skies will be sunny, with afternoon highs reaching the mid 50s to the lower 60s.

NEXT WEEK: Monday will be another outstanding day, with tons of sunshine and highs in the upper 50s to the mid 60s. Tuesday will be a little warmer as we’ll continue to have plenty of sunshine and highs in the 60s, with a few locations in southern Alabama getting close to 70.

A few shortwaves will begin to move through the state throughout the rest of the week, with the first one invading Alabama on Wednesday. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy, with showers likely north of I-20 for much of the day before spreading east and south during the evening and overnight. No severe weather is expected at this time. Highs will be in the upper 50s to the lower 70s.

Another shortwave will pull more showers into the state on Thursday. Showers will be likely at times throughout the day, but, again, severe weather is not expected. Highs will be in the upper 50s to the upper 60s. Rain may be heavy at times during the evening and late-night hours.

A cold front will finally begin to move through late in the day Friday that will begin to push the shower activity out of the state. Showers will be possible throughout the daylight hours for everyone, tapering off from west to east after sunset. Highs will be much colder, reaching only the upper 30s to the lower 50s from northwest to southeast.
