Brighter days (and nights) are ahead for Legion Field following the recent completion of LED lighting upgrades at the stadium.
City of Birmingham and Alabama Power officials met at the stadium Thursday to celebrate the accomplishment.
LED lights are more efficient than traditional lighting, which could lead to more savings.
“The enhanced lighting is expected to provide a significant economic boost to Legion Field, making it a more desirable location to host sports and entertainment events in the future,” said Julian Grant, community development specialist for Alabama Power’s Birmingham Division. “It is also another example of our continued partnership with the city of Birmingham as we work to improve the infrastructure at all of the city’s parks.”
Alabama Power removed 436 traditional fixtures and installed 204 LED fixtures, resulting in a 61% reduction in energy consumption.
“This project started in November of last year and has been a massive undertaking,” Grant said. “Even considering the supply chain issues, our Energy Services team and contractors finished the project ahead of schedule and in more than enough time for World Games.”
The new lights will get their debut Friday night when the USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers take on the New Jersey Generals.
