CLASSIC SUMMER WEATHER CONTINUES: Alabama’s weather won’t change much this week as the classic summer pattern continues. Look for partly sunny, hot, humid days with random, scattered showers and thunderstorms firing up during the afternoon and evening. Most of the summer soakers will come from 2 until 10 p.m., and odds of any one place getting wet are 30-40% most of the week. Afternoon highs will be in the 91- to 95-degree range for most communities, and a heat advisory could be needed later in the week as the heat index continues to rise.

For the big fireworks shows tonight, most, but not necessarily all, of the storms should be over by 9. Just keep an eye on radar trends if you have outdoor events going on today and tonight; there’s no way of knowing in advance exactly when and where summer storms pop up.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND AND NEXT WEEK: We will roll with a persistence forecast Saturday, Sunday and through next week as the upper ridge stays in place across the southern U.S., keeping the stronger winds aloft (the jet stream) to the north. Expect hot, humid days with a popup afternoon storm possible daily. Highs will remain between 90 and 95 degrees, which is what we expect here in mid-July.TROPICS: All is quiet across the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected for at least the next five days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1911: Record temperatures were set in the northeastern United States as a deadly heat wave hit the area that would go on to kill 380 people. In Nashua, New Hampshire, the mercury peaked at 106 degrees. Other high-temperature records were set all over New England during an 11-day period.
