Valentine’s Day horse and carriage rides
Sweeten the plans for your Valentine under the moon in a horse-drawn carriage at The Wharf in Orange Beach. Trot along Main Street, gaze at the palm tree lights and watch them come to life in the Spectra Laser Light Experience shows. Take your camera along for the ride. Warehouse 31’s Bloody Valentine
The Twisted Nurse knows all too well that misery loves company, and she’ll roam the halls of the abandoned warehouse looking for new patients to celebrate on Valentine’s Day. Bring a date or come alone for an adrenaline-packed night of screams and fun. Warehouse 31 is rated PG-13 for intensity and graphic scenes. It is not recommended for people with heart conditions, who are pregnant or anyone who suffers from intense claustrophobia or anxiety. The event is not recommended for children younger than 12. Once tickets have been purchased, there will be no refunds. The show is not affiliated with any haunted houses outside Alabama, and refunds won’t be given for tickets purchased for a Florida-based Warehouse 31. ‘Casablanca’ at Alabama Theatre
Here’s looking at you, kid! Enjoy the magical “Casablanca” on the big screen at the Alabama Theatre on Valentine’s evening. The famous film is about a cynical American expatriate who meets a former lover with unforeseen complications. Produced in 1942 with a parental guidance rating, actors Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid bring to life the dramatic tale about romance during wartime. The film will be presented with open movie captioning. Sing along to the tunes of the Mighty Wurlitzer at 7 p.m. Tickets are $9.
Southern Museum of Flight
The Tuskegee Airmen exhibit is being featured at the Southern Museum of Flight. This diorama display honoring Alabama’s famed Tuskegee Airmen is more than an exhibit. It is a spotlight shining on a significant period of American history, and this tribute highlights an extraordinary group of men who continue to provide inspiration for anyone who dares to dream. The exhibit features several World War II-era trainers, including a North American AT-6 Texan, a Vultee BT-13B Valiant and a Fairchild PT-19 Cornell. Shen Yun performance
Experience a lost culture through the art of classical Chinese dance and see legends come to life Saturday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. Shen Yun pushes the boundaries of the performing arts, with stunning costumes, high-tech backdrops and an orchestra. In 2006, a group of Chinese artists joined together in New York with a vision to revive the best of China’s cultural heritage and share it with the world. They drew courage and inspiration from their practice of Falun Dafa, a spiritual discipline based on the principles of truthfulness, compassion and tolerance. Birmingham Bottling: Soft Drinks in the Magic City exhibit
Have you ever heard of Mission Orange, Try-Me Cola, National Dope, NuGrape, Jersey Creme, Glee Ola, Gay Ola or Wiseola? Discover these brands and more in Vulcan Park & Museum’s latest exhibit, Birmingham Bottling: Soft Drinks in the Magic City. Presented by Coca-Cola Bottling Co. United, Birmingham Bottling tells a comprehensive story about Birmingham’s soft drink history, complete with the inventors and innovators, marketers and visionaries, workers and methods that made Birmingham one of the most important markets in the world. Now through January 2023, visitors will see the Birmingham History Center’s collection of vintage bottles from classic companies, such as Coca-Cola Bottling Co. United and Buffalo Rock.
Faces of Vietnam exhibit
Curated by attorney Stephen Humphreys from his travels throughout Vietnam, most of this collection is from the post Đổi Mới (Reform) era of the 1990s. Through the exhibit, Humphreys strives to answer the question: “What is the real Vietnam, and what is the face it shows the world?” The exhibit includes works from leading contemporary Vietnamese artists of the post-reform period in traditional and contemporary media, such as oil paintings, lacquer and woodblock prints. The exhibit concludes Friday, Feb. 11 at the Alabama Center for the Arts in Decatur.
The Black Jacket Symphony in concert
Remember putting on an album and listening from start to finish? Relive that moment in a live concert experience with a performance by the Black Jacket Symphony. The band will perform The Beatles’ “White Album” live on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Saenger Theatre in Mobile. Prattville’s Mardi Gras parade and celebration
Laissez les bons temps rouler. The good times will roll during the city of Prattville’s Mardi Gras parade and celebration Saturday, Feb. 12. Grand marshals Bob and Gail Coccaro will lead the parade. The celebration will start at 11 a.m. with food vendors, arts and crafts and specialty vendors. Equal Justice Initiative
Discover Black history at the newly expanded Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration in Montgomery. The museum examines the legacy of slavery, from its introduction in the New World in the 17th century to ongoing issues related to mass incarceration. The Legacy Museum includes a welcome center, gift shop and the popular restaurant Pannie-George’s Kitchen. Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
Celebrate Black History Month at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) with virtual and in-person events. Explore a variety of exhibits, including the Human Rights Gallery, Movement Gallery, Confrontation Gallery, Barriers Gallery, the Odessa Woolfolk Gallery, the “Courage Under Fire” exhibit of photos from the burning of the Freedom Riders’ bus in Anniston and “Remembering 4 Little Girls: A Gallery of Creative Expressions,” an exhibit of student works inspired by the Spike Lee film. BCRI is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
28 Days of Black Life, History and Culture
In celebration of Black History Month, explore 28 days of Black Life, History and Culture in Mobile. Events range from virtual presentations to a movie series, including:
- Daily posts of Mobile Black history facts. Follow on social media with hashtag @mobileparksandrec.
- An exhibit of art by local seniors at the Connie Hudson Center Art Gallery, open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Feb. 11: LODA ArtWalk will celebrate Black history in downtown Mobile from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Follow on social media with hashtag @LODAartwalk.
- Feb. 12: Saturdays at the Coop featuring the Boukou Groove Band at Cooper Riverside Park from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The movie series and panel discussions continue every Wednesday throughout February, starting at 6 p.m.:
- Feb. 16: “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” An African American woman becomes an unwitting pioneer for medical breakthroughs when her cells are used to create the first immortal human cell line in the early 1950s. The movie is rated TV-MA.
- Feb. 23: “42.” Jackie Robinson becomes the first African American to play in Major League Baseball when he is signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers and faces considerable racism in the process. Portions of the movie were filmed in Birmingham.
