Alabama Power Service Organization lifts Mobile-area nonprofits, brightens homes in Africatown

The city of Mobile welcomed the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) this past week, with local employee volunteers and others from around the state completing service projects in historic Africatown and at three nonprofits: Camp Grace, Mulherin Home and Feeding the Gulf Coast.
“We are so appreciative of the APSO members that rolled up their sleeves to work in our local community,” said Beth Thomas, a manager in Alabama Power’s Mobile Division. “The Alabama Power Service Organization was founded on volunteerism, and it is wonderful to see employees of our company embody that mission.”
In Africatown, 3 miles north of downtown Mobile, volunteers picked up brushes and went to work, repainting five homes at the community’s gateway. About 30 minutes away at Camp Grace, more APSO volunteers installed gutters and rain barrels on rustic cabins used free of charge by many Mobile-area nonprofit groups and their clients. The rain barrels will help reduce storm water runoff, and captured water can be used across the camp.

At Mulherin Home, a residence that provides a loving, family-like environment for people with developmental disabilities, volunteers painted, planted flowers and installed a therapeutic swing for adults with disabilities. Feeding the Gulf Coast, a hunger relief organization that serves families through 400 partner groups in Alabama, benefited from the work of APSO volunteers who sorted food for distribution and filled backpacks so children won’t go hungry after school or on the weekends.
“Alabama Power employees are dedicated to their communities,” said Margaret White, manager of Community Initiatives at the Alabama Power Foundation. “They have a heart for helping others, and they devote their own time and resources through the Alabama Power Service Organization to making Alabama better. They truly are making a difference.”
With more than 6,000 members in nine chapters statewide, APSO is always looking for opportunities to support communities, schools and nonprofit organizations, to serve as a powerful source for good.
