Being prepared for storms is a top priority for Alabama Power. The company’s engineers and linemen go to great lengths to restore power safely and efficiently to our customers after natural disasters. That’s why Alabama Power linemen and engineers will share their knowledge at “Be Ready Day,” hosted by the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency (JCEMA). The event takes place Thursday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Summit shopping center in Birmingham.

“With more than 1,200 fourth-and fifth-graders expected to attend, this is a perfect opportunity to inform the students of our dedication and commitment to safely restore power to our communities,” said Brett Hamrick, engineering supervisor for Alabama Power. “During these events, students get a glimpse of what it means to be a lineman for our company.”

Local Operations Lineman Ladarrius Clay will have his bucket truck on site and the company’s linemen will have a hands-on display of a simulated power pole line. Students will have an opportunity to open and close a switch, place a hotline clamp on a power line and watch a storm restoration video.

“It’s exciting to have the opportunity to talk to these students about career opportunities at Alabama Power and to show them how we prepare for storms,” Clay said.

The event will also include demonstrations and information from many organizations, focusing on how to be prepared before an emergency occurs. Information will include:

  • How to develop a 72-hour disaster kit
  • Developing family and pet emergency plans
  • How to respond to common medical emergencies
  • How to protect property during severe weather and natural disasters
  • Home safety tips.

Activities for children will include exhibits and displays, and presentations from local meteorologists. The event is free and open to the public.
