Can’t Miss Alabama: Holiday weekend offers a wide variety of activities

Activities abound across the state as we approach the Labor Day holiday weekend. From festivals to sporting events, here’s a look at what’s in store for this week’s edition of Can’t Miss Alabama.

Lake Events

For those of you who want to celebrate the close of summer on the lake, we have a great list of outdoor activities. Smith Lake hosts the Sweet Tater Festival; Lake Martin features an outdoor concert; and Logan Martin Lake is home to a bass tournament fundraiser. Mule Days
The town of Ider hosts Mule Days with free admission Monday, Sept.7. It’s an annual event that spotlights the community’s agricultural heritage. Mule Days will consist of a parade of mules, horses, carriages, antique tractors and more.

Moon Pie Eatin’ Contest

In McCalla’s Tannehill Iron Works Historical State Park, you can compete to win the 24th Annual Labor Day Celebration and Moon Pie Eatin’ Contest and enjoy crafts and food. Visit Tannehill State Park for more information on upcoming events.


Montgomery Biscuits’ stadium

Sporting Events

If you want to attend a sporting event this weekend, there are a number to choose across the state. The second annual Huntsville Downtown Tailgate Games around the Courthouse Square runs through Saturday, Sept. 5. Admission is free.

Miles College participates in the 11th annual Labor Day Classic against the University of North Alabama Lions. Tickets for the game can be purchased on Eventbrite for the game.

The Montgomery Biscuits take on the Birmingham Barons in the capital city through Labor Day. Visitors will also be treated to a fireworks show after the games on Friday and Sunday nights. Go here for more information on the baseball game.


Alabama Concert

The Amphitheater at The Wharf, in Orange Beach, hosts the country group Alabama in concert Sunday, Sept. 6. For more information, visit the venue’s website.
