Birmingham SlossFest profile: Logic

Logic is a hot, smooth young rapper who takes a few cues from Sinatra. (Mind of Logic)

Performer: Logic

Type of music: Hip-hop

About: It is not every day you hear of a rapper who cites Frank Sinatra as his main influence. But that is exactly what you get with up-and-coming rapper Logic. His persona is drawn from the way Sinatra would carry himself and articulate in the movies Logic’s mom made him watch growing up.

With a smooth sound, and sometimes even singing with a voice similar to Drake’s, Logic launched his career through mixtapes and uploads, with public views and downloads hitting the millions before he signed his first record deal.

Born Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, the 25-year-old rapper from Maryland has amassed a large, dedicated fan base he calls the RattPack and BobbySoxers.

Logic started his career with the mixtape “Young, Broke & Infamous” in 2010. He then signed a deal with Visionary Music Group before releasing two mixtapes over two years.

After the release of his fourth mixtape, “Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever” in 2013, he secured a recording contract with Def Jam. His debut album “Under Pressure” was released in October 2014 to critical success, with the album debuting at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart. He followed up on the success of “Young Sinatra” with “The Incredible True Story” in November 2015.

Discography: “Under Pressure”; “The Incredible True Story”; “Young, Broke & Infamous”; “Young Sinatra”; “Young Sinatra: Undeniable”; “Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever”; “Bobby Tarantino.”

You may have heard: “Under Pressure”; “Buried Alive”; “Transmission” with Zedd and X Ambassadors (featured); “Here” with Alessia Carter (remix); “Sucker for Pain” with Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Imagine Dragons, Ty Dolla $ign and X.

Sloss Music and Arts Festival takes place at the historic Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham July 16-17 and features 40 performers on four stages. Tickets can be purchased here.
