iCan Volunteer Stands Above the Crowd

We expect volunteers to give of themselves, but when someone goes above the call of duty, others take notice. Carolyn Liggins, Erwin counselor, is passionate about helping her young students take advantage of all that their education can offer. Liggins also serves as an iCan volunteer.
The Alabama Power program is helping expose female middle school students to the field of engineering through hands-on training exercises. Liggins says it’s an exceptional program because it exposes young girls to all aspects of engineering. “It’s an opportunity for them to see activities which will enhance their ability to learn. Through classroom activities, it shows them the different types of engineering disciplines to help them see that there is a wonderful field out there.”
Liggins says she’s motivated because she wants these young women to know that they can do anything they put their minds to do. Plus, she has some success stories to back her. “I have one young lady who finished our program and because of her enthusiasm, her sister entered the program as well.”
Alabama Power female engineers go to partner schools and teach what the field involves. In addition to Erwin, other schools partnering this year include Berry, Bumpus, Simmons and Trussville Middle Schools and Phillips Academy.
