Alabama Power employees volunteer for King Day
Since its founding in 1986, the national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has been a day of helping rather than resting, and Alabama Power employees will be doing their part once again Jan. 19.
Congress designated Martin Luther King Jr. Day to take place each year on the third Monday in January. It is the only federal holiday citizens are asked to observe as a “day on, not a day off.” The holiday is a part of United We Serve, President Obama’s national call to service initiative, which promotes Americans from all walks of life working together to provide solutions to the most pressing national problems.
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'” King said in 1957.
To celebrate his life, this year Americans are being asked to take the MLK Day Challenge by making a commitment to serve not just on one day, but throughout the year.
Alabama Power employees statewide, through the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO), are taking part in service projects throughout the state which include:
- Eastern Division: MLK Day, city of Anniston Carver Breakfast, Jan. 19.
- Plant Gorgas: Capstone Community Gardens flag pole installation, Jan. 19.
- Southeast Division/Farley: King Day Community Service, Jan. 19.
- Magic City: Kings Home project, Jan. 19.
- Southern Division: King Day Celebration, Jan. 21.
APSO is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization whose members support nonprofit groups and charitable projects that promote education, environment and community enhancement and meet critical human needs. With ten chapters statewide, APSO members serve more than 50,000 volunteer hours annually.
