Checking in on the woodpeckers

Alabama Power has worked to protect and expand red-cockaded woodpecker populations on Lake Mitchell since the 1980s. To do so, the company has worked to improve the longleaf pine habitat on which this federally-listed endangered species relies for nesting and foraging.

We also partner with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct nest surveys and band chicks, to better track the progress of the bird’s gradual recovery.

This video of three nestlings was taken as part of weekly checks of nesting sites we conduct through the fledging season.
